ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – Although it was not on Monday night’s agenda, hundreds gathered at the Rockingham County Administrative Centre to notify the Rockingham County Faculty Board how they felt about a coverage update that would enable transgender college students to use the rest room aligning with their gender id.
Starting off this school calendar year, all community educational institutions in Virginia need to consider new actions to protect against discrimination dependent on gender identification.
The two citizens for and against were being existing at the assembly like Ashley Saunders, a Rockingham County resident and guardian who held indicators outside the administrative heart supporting the coverage update for pupils.
“We had read there were being groups of folks coming to just oppose the transgender procedures that are being passed by the Virginia Office of Education and we preferred to present up to say we assistance these procedures, we assist these kids, and we feel trans legal rights are human legal rights,” Saunders explained.
All those against the coverage update like David Burrell held a prayer outside the administrative center for the board members. He said he knew the board was not discussing the plan Monday night time but wished to pray for each member as they continue on to go over the matter.
“I’m worried and a single of my fearful matters is what this opens the door for, I fully grasp individuals truly feel this way, I know they are passionate about it on both sides but I consider we outta get back to our Christian morals and Christian values,” Burrell said.
Dr. Oskar Scheikl, division superintendent, explained this is a plan update university divisions across the Commonwealth are talking about and will come soon after a legislation that was passed in the Standard Assembly.
Scheikl said though the policy update is not reviewed Monday night time, it will be in August.
“The U.S Department of Education has unveiled new Title IX assistance yet again all of these points occur into engage in and so we’re diligently reviewing that with legal counsel and then in August on what procedures if any have to have to improve,” Scheikl said.
Scheikl says a single of the most significant misconceptions is that the policy alter lets any scholar to go to any restroom. He said it’s truly for learners who consistently assert their gender id.
